Transport Solutions for a Growing City
The current street infrastructure and transport systems in Melbourne are being challenged in the face of rapid population and economic growth. The city is rapidly striving to respond to these challenges by adapting and upgrading the infrastructure as well as the network. On the other hand, the streets of this lively, global city should be rethought and transformed to meet the needs of the 21st century, such as high quality public spaces, priority to active and public modes of transport and climate adaptation. These collection of urgent challenges thus bring along many different stakeholders with very different agendas. Through participating in a series of consensus building workshops, these stakeholders reached a shared vision that unified all parties around common goals and provided a clearer pathway forward.
The project focused two different sites, a major street and a central area in Melbourne. The major street is currently facing great transformations due to increase in built development and population growth. This brings capacity, efficiency and spatial challenges as the area transforms from a marginal street to a central one. The second site faces similar transformations on a larger scale as it sits between two major transportation stations. Due to the unprecedented patronage growth, the area and it's periphery face safety, efficiency, accessibility and capacity issues, which also impact the walkability and liveability of the larger area.
The Visioning Workshops
The workshops were conducted drawing on a gamification methodology and using our arki_nopoly board game. The series of workshops not only brought key stakeholders around the same table but also generated a detailed understanding of the current conditions, future developments and potential solutions.
The outcomes of this multilayered process, designed to serve as the foundation of the transformation, are transport visions (for each site), identified priority areas, future actions and next steps. The process has ensured that no aspect has been overlooked and it provided a clear path for the future development of the district.
