Designing with Country in establishing a Medical and Wellness Center
The Iyoria Medical and Wellness Centre makes up a part of the establishment of the Iyoria Aboriginal Elders Belonging Estate which began in 2022. The Medical and Wellness Centre will function as the pilot project for showcasing the first culturally appropriate Elders development in Australia. As the first step towards the realisation of the Medical and Wellness Centre, arki_lab did a community consultation through facilitating an arki_nopoly workshop with a special edition of the arki_nopoly board. The goal was to establish a foundation of common understanding of the present day gaps and shortcomings in the healthcare system and thereby wishes for facilities and services to be provided in the future Iyoria facilities. The workshop also included design of the facility in terms of feel and look including materials and form.
arki_nopoly is arki_lab’s most frequently used tool to enable citizens and different stakeholders, in this case Elders, health professionals and members of the Aboriginal Community to collaborate and learn from each other in development of their local area. The game is always unique and in this case the design of the game was inspired by the traditions, respect and care that makes up the Iyoria project.
Utilising the arki_nopoly board game the workshop resulted in an inclusive and constructive discussion and accommodated sharing of insights and personal experiences as well as establishing a mutual understanding of the complexity of the project.
